Magic Tree House #24 Earthquake in the Early Morning
This is one of the series of books I looked forward to reading during this challenge. I remember reading these in elementary school and also having my teacher read these aloud in class. Earthquake in the Early Morning is written by Mary Pope Osborne. She has written 54 Magic Tree House books and also 35 Fact Tracker books.
The book starts off by Jack and Annie, brother and sister, go in their magic treehouse to see what they need to find the treehouse owner, Morgan. They have the clue that says something to lend. Then, their treehouse starts to spin and it takes them to San Fransisco, California. When Jack and Annie got there the ground started to shake and rumble and then the bricks started to separate. Soon, Jack realized that an earthquake just occurred. He could not find Annie but soon found that she was stuck in a hole of bricks. After getting Annie out, they go on a quest to find something to lend. While looking, fires started all over the city from the aftermath of the earthquake. They tried to help many people during this time. Throughout the rest of the book, Jack and Annie try and find the clue and tries to make it through the fires.
While reading Earthquake in the Early Morning, Osborn would have Jack and Annie reference their research book. Within this research would be history facts about the city that they are in. I thought these were so interesting I decided to google if they were true, from what I found they were true. I'm not sure about the other books but I thought this was interesting and could help students learn new things every day while reading! Osburne wrote with such an upbeat and lively vocabulary. The emotions that were portrayed through the reading stood out to me. Not only did she write a great book, with great content, she also had the children be filled with empathy and kindness during this book. That spoke wonders to me, it's a great example for children to read.
Overall I loved this book and the series! It would be awesome to have all the Magic TreeHouse books inside my classroom one day. If you are looking for a good book to read for your challenge I highly recommend these books!

Emma,
ReplyDeleteI LOVE these series! I would also love to have the complete series to have in my classroom and for me to read personally as well! I don't think that I have read every single one and I don't really remember this specific one that you are talking about in this post. Although it has been over 10 years since I have read them! I thought that it was cool that you fact checked. That could be a great idea as an extension activity to have students do. I always like that in these books you can find moral lessons as well. Overall, I think that I will definitely use these in my class. I think that I am going to add this series to my want to read list so that I can enjoy them all over again! I am curious to hear about where you decide to go next in your reading journey! :)
You can get these book at a great price through Scholastic. I love how the reader is able to learn a bit about history through a fictional lens.
