Blog Post #9 Matilda

I couldn't decide which book I wanted to write about for my last blog post. It was between Matilda or The City of Ember. I loved reading The City of Ember because my favorite elementary teacher read it to us and it brought back nostalgic feelings of elementary school. The City of Ember is an amazing book, and I highly recommend it. However, Matilda wins the cake. This is one of the books that beat the movie. (Which happens a lot) I loved reading this book and imagining what I would think Matilda would look like or what the cake Trunchbull made the student eat looked like. This is such a good story that everyone should read. Matilda is by Ronald Dahl.

Matilda was an extraordinary child, however, she was nothing like the family she was born into. Her father owned a car dealership and did illegal things to cars to make the most money. Her mother was only worried about her looks, tv shows, and her husband. Matilda also had a brother that was just like her dad. Matilda basically taught herself everything from tying her shoes to reading to cooking. She loved to read, she would make trips to the local library and read all the books she could. Once Matilda was old enough, she begged her parents to let her go to school. They only let her go to school because her father made a deal with the principal, Trunchbull. Matilda was so excited on her first day until she saw the real side of Trunchbull. Trunchbull was a mean ugly woman who threw kids across the playground, locked students inside a chamber in her office, and was very nasty to the teachers. Although, Matilda had a wonderful teacher, Ms. Honey. Matilda loved Ms. Honey, she was so sweet to her and adored everything about her. Ms. Honey learns that Matilda is gifted not only when it comes to school work but also when it comes to magical things, like moving things in the classroom. Matilda and Ms. Honey because of the best of friends. Throughout the rest of the book, Matilda gets into michesviouous situations. The end of the book will leave you smiling and so happy.

I obviously knew the storyline of Matilda before even reading it because of the movie that I've watched years ago. Roald Dahl gives you an incredible journey through Matilda's life even better than the movie does. Instead of just seeing how ugly and nasty Miss Trunchbull is in the movie, in the book you actually get to understand and envision it for yourself. The illustrations also blew my mind away because they were so good. They were different than any of the other illustrations you'd see in a book. They were sort of messy looking but still put together. (If that makes any sense)

I overall loved reading this book! I was glad I got to experience the book as well as the movie. I always like to read the book and watch the movie to compare and contrast the two. This is a bigger book, so I think it would be great for a student who excelled in reading and wanted to read bigger books but still stay in their reading level. Overall, if you like the movie, you'll love the book. Highly recommend!
